Perhaps the most powerful insight occured during a "learning circle" I facilitated that read John Tagg's book The Learning Paradigm College. Without going into details, I clearly came to see that my previous way of thinking about college--that it was about "self discovery"--was very much about "exploring one's box." I now think of college as being about "self creation"--creating a new box.

Talk about empowerment! I now see that the possibilities for myself are endless and I get to help my students and colleagues see that the same is true for them. Which interpretation is more forwarding? To explore myself as I am or to create myself as I want to be?
